Next week will be filled with activities and celebrations and I for one can't wait! The Novium Museum's award-winning Chichester Roman Week begins on Saturday 28 May, which also marks the start of the school holidays. It offers a diverse range of activities and events across the city and surrounding areas, designed to engage visitors of all ages.
One activity not to be missed is the spectacular re-enactment in Priory Park on Wednesday 1 June. Supported with funding from the Roman Society and the Roman Research Trust, the event will bring the Roman period to life with everything from gladiators in combat, to Roman soldiers in action. Other demonstrations will cover aspects of civilian life including home life, slavery and religion. As well as the re-enactors, there will be storytelling, craft activities, Roman hair styling by Chichester College and the opportunity to step inside a virtual Roman villa with Wessex Archaeology. We then move into the special extended bank holiday weekend, which starts on Thursday 2 June. This will provide an opportunity for people to mark Her Majesty's 70 years as reigning monarch. Locally, there are many events and activities taking place and street parties have been organised across the district.
On Friday 3 June, our Chichester Farmers' Market will be helping you to prepare for your weekend celebrations with fresh produce from 9am until 2pm. On the same day, Chichester Cathedral is hosting a Jubilee Picnic on their green between 12pm and 3pm.
On Saturday 4 June there will be a Jubilee Celebration at Cowdray Ruins in Midhurst between 12pm and 4pm, while in Chichester the city council is organising a Gala Procession and Family Fun Day from 11am onwards.
On Sunday 5 June, there will be a Jubilee Jamboree and Air Show in Selsey from 9am until 9pm; while Petworth will be holding a big lunch in the Market Square from 12pm - 3pm; and Southbourne Parish Council is organising a 'Picnic in the Park' at the Recreation Ground from 11am - 3pm. We know that many people are also arranging their own events, either in their gardens or through organised street parties. If you're planning a party or barbecue to celebrate, please remember that warm weather, outdoor cooking, and serving food outside are the perfect conditions for bacteria to grow and increase the chance of food poisoning. The guide includes useful reminders around making sure that chilled food isn't left out of the fridge for more than four hours; tips on offering information to guests about allergens and the ingredients in the food you serve; and, taking extra care with perishable unpacked foods, particularly if we're lucky enough to get some lovely warm weather.
Please also try and avoid using plastic cups and paper plates to reduce the amount of waste created from any events. I know that some event organisers have asked people to bring their own crockery so that they can limit their impact on the environment, which is a great idea. Our waste and recycling crews are continuing to work as usual and so there will be no change to your bin collections.
