Busking

What is Busking

Busking is a long-standing tradition that brings vibrant entertainment to our public spaces. Busking is the practice of:

  • performing music;
  • street theatre, or;
  • other arts for voluntary donations.

Busking also enhances community pleasure. We encourage responsible busking that enhances our community while respecting residents and businesses.

Buskers code of conduct

A  busking license is not required. However, sometimes buskers may be too loud and/or obstructing the highway. Street performers are encouraged to follow the following guidelines. This is to ensure a positive experience for everyone:

Respectful use of public space

  • Minimizing obstruction: Performers should not block pedestrian flow. They should also be aware of street cleaning, and access to any business. Equipment placement should be considerate.

  • Noise control: Performances should not create excessive noise that disturbs residents or businesses. Volume and duration should be managed responsibly.

Recommendations

  • No street furniture use: Avoid using benches, lamp posts, planters, railings, attaching posters or adverts.

  • Spacing: Please maintain a minimum suggested distance of 50 meters from other performers.

  • Time limits: Performances should be limited to 90 minutes per location. This includes breaks. Performers should avoid returning to the same spot within 24 hours.

  • Appropriate behaviour: Performances should be safe and respectful. Please avoid any conduct or attire that could cause alarm, distress, or offense.

  • Passive donations: Actively soliciting money is not permitted. However, a receptacle (hat, case, etc.) for voluntary donations is acceptable.

  • Merchandise sales: Selling merchandise requires a street trading licence.

  • Clear access: Please do not obstruct access to shops and facilities.

  • Breaks and compliance: Please take regular breaks to allow crowds to disperse. You must also comply with reasonable requests from council or police officers.

  • Minors: We suggest that minors are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Enforcement and support

We will investigate noise complaints reported to us. If you experience a noise disturbance. We will offer advice and work to resolve the issue. If necessary, we will use our legal powers to address persistent problems.
