General waste bin items

Find out what you can and cannot put in your black general waste bin.

Yes please

Your black bin is for general household waste only. Please try to recycle as much as you can

No thanks

Please do not put items in your bin that are hazardous, too large or heavy, for example:

  • Gas bottles
  • Motor vehicle parts
  • Bricks/rubble/plasterboard
  • Garden waste, soil or large branches
  • Commercial waste
  • Hazardous waste such as batteries, low energy light bulbs or paint
  • Syringes or needles
  • Electrical items

Your household waste must be contained within your bin with the lid closed. If you leave excess waste on top of, or near your black bin, we will not collect it.

Excess general waste

We will collect additional general waste that cannot fit inside the black bin if it is contained in a biodegradable council excess waste sack. Waste contained in other bags around the bin will not be taken away. Council sacks cost £1.10 each and they should be placed next to your black bin on your general waste collection day.

Council excess waste sacks can be purchased at the following locations:

  • East Pallant House, East Street, Chichester, PO19 1TY
  • Selsey Town Council, High Street, Selsey. PO20 0RB
  • The Grange, Bepton Road, Midhurst, GU29 9HD

Collection service dates

We operate an alternate weekly waste and recycling collection service. Please check your bin day. Most properties are required to use two wheeled bins, a burgundy bin for recycling and a black bin for residual waste. The council also operates a chargeable garden waste collection service for cuttings using a green wheeled bin collected fortnightly.

Report a missed bin collection

If your bin has not been collected on its normal collection day, please report a missed bin collection to us.
