Are you registered to carry waste?

It is really important that you register as a waste carrier if you:

  • transport waste
  • buy, sell or dispose of your waste, or
  • arrange for someone else to buy, sell or dispose of your waste.

If you fail to do so, you could be fined up to £5,000.

Registering as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency is for the benefit of your business and your customers. It's easy to apply for a waste carrier licence (opens new window) and this is usually free if you only transport waste you produce yourself. Otherwise registration costs £154. Once you've registered, your details will appear on the public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers (opens new window).

As a council we have seen an increase in the amount of waste that is being fly tipped in our beautiful district. This is unsightly; poses an environmental risk; and clearing it up is a huge cost to our local taxpayers. To tackle this problem, we will be making residents and businesses aware that they need to check that anyone they use to remove waste has registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency. We will also be letting them know about the fines they face if they don't and their rubbish is later found to have been fly tipped.

If you use someone else to carry waste on your behalf, or if you are a householder or business looking for ways to dispose of you waste safely and legally, please use a licensed waste carrier. You can also take a look at the advice on our fly tipping web page.

Claim your free 'I'm registered' publicity pack

In order to support those businesses and tradespeople who register, or have already registered, we have designed a publicity pack for them to promote that they are licensed to carry waste. These packs will be issued to those companies who can prove that they have registered with the Environment Agency, and include: a logo that can be displayed on the waste carrier's website; a window sticker that can be put in a vehicle or premises; and, text that can be used on a website or in other promotional materials . All of this will help residents and businesses identify those who can dispose of their waste safely and legally.

It's easy to register as a waste carrier and once registered, you can then sign up to claim your free 'We're a licensed waste carrier' publicity pack.
