According to Census 2011, the total population for Chichester District was estimated to be 113,794 split as 47.8% male and 52.2% female. Although the Office for National Statistics estimates that this has risen to 120,192 according to their mid-2017 population estimate.
Summary
- Almost 1 in 3 households in Chichester District are single person occupancies. This is generally in line with county, regional and national averages.
- 66.1% of the population stated their religion as Christianity. Despite this percentage falling from 77.3% in 2001 (a decrease of 7,012 people) it remains the most frequently held belief across the district. Almost a quarter of the population does not hold any religious beliefs. Since 2001 there have been 12,784 additional people in this category giving it the largest growth.
- Between 2001 and 2011 'Shared Ownership' housing (part-owned and part-rented) increased by 138.2% from 191 to 455 properties. This is the 2nd highest increase in West Sussex and is reflective of the need for affordable homes and the drive for more mixed communities.
- With 14.5% Chichester District has the highest percentage of self-employed residents in West Sussex, exceeding the regional and national averages.
- As at 2011, Chichester District has the highest number of full time students (6,266) in West Sussex.

Average life expectancy of district residents is 81.1 for men and 85 for women. This compares to the West Sussex male average of 80.6 and female average of 84.2. The national average is 79.6 for men and 83.2 for women.
