Chichester District tree scheme
The Tree Chichester District scheme is part of the council's ambition to tackle climate change and support the district's wildlife and environmental resilience.
Between December 2020 and September 2025 Chichester District Council has been a part of the Trees Outside Woodland project, funded by HM Government's Shared Outcomes Fund and led by Defra, The Tree Council, and Natural England, alongside four other local authorities. This project has sought to explore effective and efficient ways to establish non-woodland trees. You can read more about this project on the Tree Council's website; Tree Council Wesbite (opens new window)
Through this project we have planted over 65,000 trees at over 210 sites in the district, these trees will provide many benefits for communities and the environment.
Apply for funding to plant trees in the Chichester District
We currently have funding to offer free trees and support materials (such as tree protection and mulch) to residents, community groups, parish councils, farmers and organisations who want to plant trees outside woodlands
If you own the land or have permission from the landowner, and the project offers a public or community benefit — whether that's planting in a space people can access or involving others in the planting itself — please apply.
Applications are open until 17 November 2025, and you can request an application form by emailing: treescheme@chichester.gov.uk. Our Tree Project Officer will assess each site, and trees will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If your application is successful, you'll need to complete your planting by 16 February 2026
The project has been made possible with the support of a grant from The Tree Council's and Defra's Trees Outside Woodland Fund
Do I need to gain permission before planting trees?
Yes, you must obtain permission from the landowner to plant the trees, as all future responsibility for the trees will rest with the landowner. Chichester District Council, West Sussex County Council or Parish Councils can offer help when establishing who owns the land.
I only need one or two trees to plant in my small neighbourhood. What can I do?
West Sussex County Council also has a donate a tree scheme (opens new window) where people can apply for trees for their streets.
Who can I speak to about any further questions?
