Please help us in our fight against this crime. Fly tipping is an offence that we take very seriously. Around £350,000 of local taxpayers' money is spent every year clearing up fly tips in the Chichester District. Fly tipped waste typically consists of household rubbish, large domestic items such as fridges and furniture, garden refuse, building rubble, asbestos waste and tyres. This ruins our beautiful district, is unsightly, poses an environmental risk, and clearing it up is a huge cost to our local taxpayers. We are working hard to tackle the issue, but we need your help.

How can you help prevent fly tipping?

Your rubbish, your responsibility

You are legally responsible for your own waste - this is called your 'duty of care'.

Whether you've been doing DIY, clearing out your home, or tidying the garden, it's up to you to make sure your waste is disposed of safely and legally.

If you hire someone to take your waste away, they must be a licensed waste carrier registered with the Environment Agency. Always ask to see their licence and request a waste transfer note as proof.

If your waste ends up fly-tipped and you didn't check, you could be held responsible - even if someone else dumped it. This could lead to a fine or prosecution.

Check if your waste carrier is licensed

Make sure you're against fly tipping and follow our top tips before asking someone to remove your waste:

Avoid using a company / individual if they don't have a licence
Get their waste carrier number from the Environment Agency website (opens new window)
Ask to see their waste carrier licence
Insist on them giving you a waste transfer note and receipt
Note their vehicle registration number
Speak to them and ask what will happen to your waste

Register for a waste carrier licence

It is really important that you register as a waste carrier if you:

transport waste
buy, sell or dispose of your waste, or
arrange for someone else to buy, sell or dispose of your waste.

Registering as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency is for the benefit of your business and your customers. Once you've registered with the Environment Agency then your details will appear on the public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers

Claim your free 'I'm registered' pack

As a council we have seen an increase in the amount of waste that is being fly tipped in our beautiful district. Those who are caught dumping waste on public or private land could face an unlimited fine and a prison sentence. In order to support those waste carriers who register with the Environment Agency, we have designed a publicity pack to help them promote that they are licensed. These packs include a logo that can be displayed on the waste carrier's website, a sticker that can be put in a vehicle or in their premises, and text that can be used on a website or in other promotional material. All of this will help customers identify that the business or tradesperson is licensed to legally and safely dispose of their waste.
